My journey as an author
My love for cooking started relatively early as a child, I had an amazing mother that always cooked beautiful homemade meals.
In our family we grew up with a slow combustion stove and there were always beautiful roasts cooking and cakes baking. Around the age of ten I started to spend time in the kitchen baking with my sister, whipping up delicious homemade lemon meringue pies, profiteroles, date bread and many more. So I become obsessed with the art of baking and the creativity of cooking.
Many hours in the kitchen were spent, and of course being a fairly messy cook many hours were spent cleaning too ha.
As I became older I became interested in health and herbs, so I studied herbal medicine, nutrition and massage.
I started to eat healthier meals and became vegetarian for a short period of time, I became more interested in experimenting and perhaps less baking of delicious sweets.
I worked in a health retreat preparing many different salads and healthy breakfast meals, and years waitressing, so my passion for food was always around me. Perhaps entering motherhood lead to a deeper desire to nourish my children and family, for a short period I owned an organic grocery store and juice bar. As a herbalist I started realising during my consultations, how important nutrition was to teach my clients and healthy cooking ideas.
In the last few years I have got really passionate about making raw slices and just a well rounded organic where possible whole food diet. So it came about that I started teaching cooking classes at a mutli- disciplinary clinic where I had worked for many years. Its been a pleasure and a lot of fun teaching my students at my classes, and my goal is always about the importance of quick easy, healthy wholesome meals.
I like to use a lot of herbal and nutritional powders into raw slices, smoothies and so forth, to enhance the goodness of recipes and adding extra nutrient value.
My approach to cooking is always using the freshest organic ingredients where possible, I’m not vegetarian at this stage in my life but have been. I like to educate people about eating what is right for them and their bodies. I eat a whole range of foods, some meals can be vegetarian, others not depending on my budget and how much foods left in the fridge after my lovelies have rampaged my refrigerator. I have always preferred to eat organic where possible and local too and I’m lucky to live in an area abundant with good produce.
I do prefer to eat gluten free for most of my meals as it works better on my digestive system to avoid mostly, some days I may have a cheat day and use spelt flour or enjoy a piece of sourdough toast. Again listen to your body and how you feel when you eat certain foods, as Hippocrates said” Let Food Be your Medicine and Medicine be your food”.
So in summary I love cooking and educating people about healthy eating and food as medicine principles.
I am a home cook and not a chef, so forgive me if you find any fault with my recipes, many have been tried and tested by my students, friends and family.
Cooking is to me is my happy place, is where I can spend hours creating and getting lost in the moment.
So I hope that you will enjoy my food ideas and have fun creating and nourishing yourself and others close to you. My ultimate goal is to teach you that cooking can be fun creative and doesn’t have to be hours, slaving away in the kitchen.
